Approach and anchoring
Approach Rockland Harbour from the east, leaving the granite breakwater and its lighthouse to starboard. Once inside the breakwater the holding is good in mud and the inner basin is sheltered from all quarters. Owls Head Light marks the southern entrance to the bay. Journey's End Marina lies 0.2 NM north-east as the nearest backup.
Practical
Around 90 berths from 20 to 50 feet plus 20 moorings for yachts up to 60 feet, with dinghy docks ashore. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol, ice, showers, laundry and an on-site restaurant. Hamilton Marine chandlery, dive service and yard work available through the marina. Address 5 Commercial Street, Rockland, ME.
Ashore
Downtown Rockland is one block from the marina, with the Farnsworth Art Museum and the Wyeth Center on Elm Street and the Maine Lighthouse Museum on Park Drive. The Rockland Breakwater walk to the 1902 lighthouse runs for seven-eighths of a mile from Jameson Point.
History
The Rockland breakwater was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1880 and 1900 using more than 700,000 tons of granite from Vinalhaven, and the lighthouse at its end was lit in 1902.
