Guide
Approach and anchoring
This half-tide harbour is easy to reach from St Peter Port, suits bilge keels and multihulls and is rarely troubled by swell. Visitors lie on buoys and ground chains either side of the ferry channel, which must stay clear. Away from them the bottom is rock, and in 2022 the northern part held little sand, so pick a buoy that dries onto sand. Keel boats can lie against the inner harbour walls. A 6 kn limit applies in the approaches.
Practical
Mooring has been free, but an overnight stay needs permission from the island's administration office or the White House Hotel. The inner harbour takes about 8 boats moored fore and aft, and the beach chains about 30. Yachts arriving from outside the Bailiwick cannot come straight to Herm and must first clear in at Guernsey or Alderney.
Ashore
Herm has no cars. The island has the White House Hotel, the Mermaid Tavern, the Ship Inn and a shop. Paths lead to Shell Beach, named after a band of shells that once lined it. Belvoir Bay is a small cove on the east side.
