Guide

Approach and anchoring

A strong stream runs between Brecqhou and Sark on the way in. The coast is unlit, and at night the buoys only show when close in. Yellow buoys are for visitors and red ones are private. They lie close together, and boats swinging differently can come within 1 m. The cove is sheltered from N and NE. It rolls at high water, even in light E winds, and any S to W swell makes it uncomfortable.

Practical

Visitor buoys cost 25 pounds per 24 hours in 2026, first come first served. Payment is at the Visitor Centre or by QR code. If all are taken, anchor in deep water over weed with 50 to 60 m of scope. La Grande Grève lies 0.5 NM south. The landing stage is cut into the rock behind an outcrop at the south end. Leave a long painter, as the spring range is about 8 m.

Ashore

From the landing, a steep cliff path climbs to the plateau and the Pilcher Monument. Paths, not always signposted, lead on to the village, a small harbour and a pub. In 2022 the ladder visible on arrival was off limits and unsafe. That year day visitors left the island around 18:00, and it grew quieter after.

History

The granite Pilcher Monument stands on the cliff above the cove. Pilcher's widow raised it after a gig left Havre Gosselin for Guernsey in October 1868, despite warnings about the weather. The men aboard were lost. From the monument, the Avenue in the village is about 15 minutes' walk.
