Marina of 115 berths in a flooded granite quarry on the north-east coast of Guernsey, entered through a narrow cut in the rock. It is a Customs port of entry.

Approach and anchoring

From the waypoint SE of the Petite Canupe south cardinal, turn west up the fairway on the leading lights to the white entrance marks. Strong cross-tides ease close in. Entry needs 2 m over the sill, about 3 hours either side of HW, shown on the breakwater gauge. In 2025 the shallowest sounding was where the rock walls begin, seaward of the gauge. The basin is about 20 m deep. Call VHF 80 first. Strong N to E weather makes entry dangerous.

Practical

Four red waiting buoys with strops lie off the entrance and roll overnight. A July 2026 gale shifted a red and a green channel buoy. Staff help with berthing. Walk-ashore pontoons have water and power, power charged extra. Showers, a laundry, a diesel berth and bikes for hire. Crews from outside the Bailiwick post the Customs form in the yellow box by the office. In June 2026 a meal at the marina restaurant earned a free night. Call ahead on +44 1481 245000.

Ashore

A bus stop five minutes' walk away serves St Peter Port and the rest of the island. Guernsey's coastal path passes the marina, and a beach lies within walking distance. The Saltwater Restaurant and Bar stands on the waterfront. The marina reception sells a few provisions. Supermarkets are a bus or bike ride away. Roadside stalls in the lanes sell vegetables and eggs.

History

The site was a granite quarry, bought by Vale Investments in the 1960s. In 1968 the Royal Engineers set out to blast an entrance from the sea. The job proved harder than planned and was finished the following year with high explosives, flooding the quarry to make the marina.
