Marina on the east coast of the presqu'île de Giens, in the commune of Hyères, Var, on the Rade d'Hyères facing the île de Porquerolles.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Rade d'Hyères, clear of the shoal ground off the airport runway to the north. Entry between two jetties, leading marks on the east mole. Maximum draught only 0.8 m in the basin, so the port suits day boats and small cruisers, larger keelboats should head to Port Saint-Pierre or Porquerolles. VHF channel 9. Strong mistral from the NW builds short steep chop in the rade.
Practical
430 berths, capitainerie open year-round, water and electricity on pontoons, sanitary block with showers, pump-out. Shops, bakery, restaurants and a supermarket within 300 m in Ayguade village. Airport Toulon-Hyères is 2 km north.
Ashore
Sandy beach directly beside the port, running 4 km north to Les Salins. Salins des Pesquiers and étang des Pesquiers, a Conservatoire du littoral wetland famous for pink flamingos, 3 km south on the tombolo. Parc national de Port-Cros boundary is offshore, reachable by tender or by day charter from Hyères.
History
Ayguade preserves the Roman name Aquatis, the watering place where ships from Olbia and then Toulon took on fresh water from springs at the foot of the Maurettes hills.
Story
Saint Louis embarked from Aigues-Mortes for the Seventh Crusade in 1248, but returning ships often watered at the Ayguade springs, giving the anchorage its name.
