Guide
Approach and anchoring
Great Harbor is reached through The Strait, a narrow channel between Nonamesset Island and Penzance Point that runs between ledges. The Woods Hole passage carries a strong tidal stream, so time the approach near slack water. Anchor clear of the fairway channel and contact the harbourmaster. Moorings are available through Woods Hole Marine.
Ashore
Woods Hole village lies just south-east of the anchorage, with the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the NOAA fisheries station all on the waterfront. Shops and the Eel Pond drawbridge are within a short tender trip.
History
Woods Hole was a working harbour for guano cargoes in the 19th century, when American schooners anchored in Great Harbor waiting to unload at the processing plant on Long Neck.
