Approach and anchoring

Anchor overnight in the outer harbour only, east of red nun 8 along the Chappaquiddick shore. Keep clear of the channel and swim zones. The anchorage is well protected from prevailing south-westerlies but exposed to northerly winds. The inner harbour has no room to anchor and the harbourmaster is the sole mooring provider. VHF 74.

Practical

A launch services the anchorage and the inner mooring field. Free pump-out is available to all vessels in Edgartown waters. Shops, provisions and restaurants are within walking distance of the town landing.

Ashore

Edgartown village sits at the head of the harbour, with whaling-era captains' houses along North Water Street and the white cast-iron Edgartown Lighthouse on the shore. A small ferry crosses to Chappaquiddick Island in a few minutes.

History

Edgartown grew as a whaling port in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Greek Revival houses built by ship captains still line the streets above the harbour.
