Maseline Harbour
- Type
- Harbour
Commercial jetty on the east coast of Sark, where the passenger ferries from Guernsey berth. There are no cars on Sark, and goods leave the quay by tractor.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Yachts may only drop off or pick up passengers at the jetty, when no commercial or emergency vessel needs it, and may never stay alongside. The moorings in Maseline are private. In 2023 the two short-stay buoys off the harbour sat in the tidal stream and rolled. Creux, the small drying harbour next door, takes boats of moderate size in a calm sea only, as surge enters with any swell.
Practical
At Creux, visitors may lie against the wall, keeping the steps and slipway clear, and tell the harbourmaster before leaving a boat unattended. Free toilets and paid showers are through the tunnel, and the Harbour Café opens most days in summer. Visitor buoys lie round the corner at Grève de la Ville. Yachts from outside the Bailiwick must first clear in at Guernsey or Alderney.
History
Creux's first entrance was cut through the rock in 1588, and the main entrance and harbour wall followed in 1866. Work on Maseline began before the Second World War, and the Duke of Edinburgh opened the new harbour during the royal visit of June 1949.
