Approach and anchoring
The basin shelters boats from the swell but not from the wind, and the outer transit pontoon is exposed to the Tramontane, with strong gusts felt even when moored and some residual chop. Call the marina on VHF 9 on approach; marineros come out, at times with tenders, to help with lines, which is welcome as berthing stern-to in a crosswind is tight. Along the pier some skippers berth bow-to, where the rudder can touch the rocks.
Practical
Among the cheapest ports on the Costa Brava; a 12-metre catamaran ran around 70 euros a night in early July, with water and electricity charged on top for larger boats. The washrooms are clean, though the harbour office and showers can be a long walk from the berth.
History
The Roses citadel, a 16th-century Renaissance fortress enclosing the earlier Greek and Roman site of Rhode, overlooks the town.
