Guide

Approach and anchoring

Mooring is on buoys, and when they are laid anchoring is allowed only outside the field, where the bottom drops below 15 metres. In winter the buoys are lifted and anchoring is allowed near the beach in about 5 metres, on sand among posidonia and some concrete blocks. Shelter is good right through a tramontana, which blows down the valley and accelerates over the hill, so much so that buoy lines have parted in the night; rig a second line as backup. The sea stays flat.

Practical

Buoys must be booked and paid through the Port de Roses app, which is fiddly; book before 1000 for the day, with a separate night slot from 1800, and note the warden comes round about 1900, so a boat there since early afternoon pays for both. Calling the harbour office by phone works too, in French. Prices are high and vary with length, from around 25 euros to over 40, easing off outside July and August.

Ashore

The Cala Joncols hotel and restaurant stands by the beach and will deliver paella out to the boat, with a boatman running crews ashore. A beach bar opens in summer with concerts at weekends. Fresh water can be drawn from a spring at the southern end of the beach. Through the day jet skis and noisy boats come and go, but it quietens in the evening.
