Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north, between the Basse Flore cardinal mark and the rocks off the island, now with an offshore wind-farm exclusion zone to avoid on the way in. Entry between two stone jetties with lit heads; the channel carries least water of about 1.8 m at the mouth at low water, so keep off the walls and favour the fuel-dock side when leaving on a low tide. The marina pontoons lie west of the ferry and fishing quays. In season boats raft several abreast and mooring help is limited. VHF 9.
Practical
648 berths with water and electricity, fuel berth with diesel and petrol, sanitary block with showers, careening area and boatyard. The sanitary block is ageing and gets dirty when the port is full. Rubbish is loaded from a quay near pontoon A, noisy and smelly in the early morning. Techno Marine on the port handles electronics and engine repairs. All shops, bakeries and a supermarket in the village within 300 m of the quay.
Ashore
Rental of bicycles at the port is the standard way to cross the island, 10 km long. Vieux Château on the south coast cliffs, a 15th-century fortified ruin, 5 km by bike. Plage des Vieilles on the south shore and Pointe du But lighthouse to the west.
History
Marshal Philippe Pétain was imprisoned in the fort of Pierre-Levée above Port-Joinville from 1945 until his death in 1951 and is buried in the island cemetery.
