Main marina of Ajaccio with 1007 berths, located north of the old town in the Golfe d'Ajaccio.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the Golfe d'Ajaccio from the west, passing north of the Îles Sanguinaires. The marina lies on the north shore, clear of the commercial quays. Maximum draught up to 20 m at the outer pontoons accommodates large yachts. Call on VHF 9 and staff come out by dinghy to help with berthing. Multihulls and larger yachts are usually placed on the outer reception pontoon along the sea wall, which is exposed and can roll; berths there lie stern-to with lines run back to mooring buoys, so carry two 20 m warps and good fenders.
Practical
1007 berths with water and electricity. Fuel berth for diesel. The showers and toilets sit inside the capitainerie and are only open during its hours, roughly 07h to 21h, and the showers are chargeable. Self-service laundry, a well-stocked chandlery and marine repair firms are on site, with a boatyard and travel lift for haul-out and winter storage. The nearest supermarket is about ten minutes on foot, and Super U delivers to the marina for orders over 50 euros. Berths by the quayside bars, above all the Quai d'Honneur, stay noisy until the early hours. City centre 1 km south along the seafront.
Ashore
Plage Saint-François and Plage Trottel, both in the city, reached on foot along the boulevard. A line of restaurants faces the marina, among them the Lodge for fish. Route des Sanguinaires leads 12 km west to the Îles Sanguinaires nature site, with the Pointe de la Parata lighthouse at the tip. Musée Fesch and Maison Bonaparte 1,2 km south in the old town.
History
Ajaccio was founded in 1492 by the Bank of Saint George of Genoa on a site occupied since Roman times. The city became French with Corsica in 1768, a year before Napoleon's birth.
Story
The marina is named after Charles Ornano, mayor of Ajaccio from 1963 to 1997, who oversaw its construction in the 1970s.
