Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the SW across the Golfe d'Ajaccio, rounding the citadel headland. Yellow buoys now mark a no-anchoring zone off the St François beach under a prefectoral decree, and both patrols and hostile locals have been known to move boats on, so check the current rules before dropping. Outside the restricted zone the water deepens to around 15 m. Where anchoring is allowed the bottom is mixed sand and Posidonia, so use clear sand patches only in 3 to 8 m. Shelter from NW, N and NE, exposed to the libeccio from the SW. Port Tino Rossi 0.4 NM NE is the nearest refuge.
Practical
Water available ashore. No fuel or electricity at anchor. All services and provisions in Ajaccio town centre, 300 m from Port Tino Rossi.
Ashore
Citadelle Miollis, built from 1492 by the Genoese and completed under Louis XV, stands directly above the mooring. Maison Bonaparte, birthplace of Napoleon in 1769, is at 400 m in the old town, rue Saint-Charles. Marché central on place Campinchi, 500 m, every morning except Monday.
History
Ajaccio was founded as a Genoese stronghold in 1492. It is the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, born on 15 August 1769 in the Maison Bonaparte. The citadel served as a military site until 2005 and was transferred to the city in 2019.
