Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open approach from the gulf of Ajaccio, keep clear of the harbour entrance traffic to the north. Anchor on sand in 8 to 11 metres, deeper towards the breakwater; holding is generally good but there are patches of foul ground with old chains and several heavy trunk buoys, some half sunk, so check the set. The town shelters it well from the Libeccio and the westerly swell, and it is exposed to S and SE winds. The ferries lie close by and bring wash, engine noise and fumes morning and evening, with music from the front some nights.
Practical
Water point ashore. Dinghy landing at the Dingy Dock 0.1 nm to the N, or alongside the reception and catamaran quays just north of the harbour. Port Charles Ornano at 0.2 nm offers fuel, electricity, sanitaires and a chandlery. Supermarkets in town will deliver a grocery order to the port, useful for stocking up before a passage, and there is a tackle shop by the harbour office.
Ashore
Ajaccio old town and the Maison Bonaparte museum, birthplace of Napoleon in 1769, lie about 800 m north along the seafront. Place Foch market every morning except Monday. The Îles Sanguinaires road leads west to Pointe de la Parata, 12 km by road.
