Anchorage off a rocky headland on the New York shore of Lake Champlain, about four miles south-east of Essex.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Rocky bottom, so holding is uncertain and the anchor should be checked once set. The point shelters from south-west through south-east and stays open to the north.
Practical
No facilities on site. Point Bay Marina lies 1.8 miles east and Essex Marina 2.5 miles north for berths and provisioning.
Ashore
Split Rock Mountain Wild Forest rises behind the point, with marked trails through the hills above the lake reached from the shore.
History
Split Rock headland marked the boundary between French and English claims after the second French and Indian War in 1713, and earlier divided Algonquin and Iroquois lands. A lighthouse first lit at the point in 1838 still stands, now privately owned.
