Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open approach from the baie de Douarnenez, no tidal gate. Entry between the môle du Rosmeur and the breakwater. The bay is exposed to westerly winds, which build a swell into the approach. Port Rhu lock basin lies 0,5 NM to the SW, Tréboul marina 0,7 NM to the west for pontoon berthing.
Practical
Working fishing port with a fish auction and visitor moorings on buoys managed by the harbour office. Limited yacht facilities on the quay itself. Town shops, bakeries and restaurants along the quay du Rosmeur.
Ashore
Sentier des douaniers GR34 runs along the cliffs toward the pointe de Leydé. Port-Musée at Port Rhu, 0,6 km on foot, with a floating collection of working boats. Plage des Dames beach at the east end of the quay.
History
Douarnenez was one of the main sardine fishing ports of France in the 19th century, with canneries employing thousands of women known locally as penn sardin. The 1924 strike of the sardine workers is a documented episode of French labour history.
