Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Admiralty Inlet between Point Wilson and Marrowstone Point. The entrance is on the south side of Point Hudson, marked by a stone breakwater. Watch for strong tidal streams off Point Wilson, especially on the ebb against a westerly. VHF 66A.
Practical
Around 475 berths and over 6 000 transient nights a year, vessels up to 30 metres. Shore power, fresh water, showers, laundry and pump-out. The Fish'n Hole fuel berth has petrol, diesel and stove oil, 7 days a week. Boatyard with travel lifts up to 300 tons, dry storage and over sixty marine trades on site.
Ashore
Downtown Port Townsend, with its Victorian brick buildings from the 1880s, is 1.2 km along Sims Way. Fort Worden State Park at 3.5 km has trails, beaches and the Marine Science Center. Wooden Boat Festival in early September draws around 30 000 visitors.
History
Port Townsend was a major customs port for Puget Sound from 1854 and expected to become the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad. When the railway went to Tacoma in 1890, the boom collapsed, which is why the Victorian commercial core was never rebuilt and survives intact today.
