Historic timber wharf in Penn Cove, on the north side of Whidbey Island. The only public moorage on the cove.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Penn Cove from Saratoga Passage between Snatelum Point and Long Point. The wharf is on the south shore, recognisable by its red shed at the head. Approach the floats on the east side of the wharf. Fetch builds from the south-east when the wind funnels down the cove.
Practical
Around 120 metres of side-tie on the floating dock and four mooring buoys, first come first served. No shore power and no fresh water at the float. Pump-out for vessels up to 24 metres. Showers in the building at the head of the wharf. Fuel berth with petrol and diesel.
Ashore
Front Street shops and restaurants of Coupeville start at the foot of the wharf. The Island County Historical Museum is 50 metres away. Ebey's Landing National Historical Reserve, with farmland trails and bluff walks above the Strait of Juan de Fuca, begins 1.5 km west of the village.
History
The wharf was built in 1905 as a grain dock for shipping Whidbey Island wheat and oats to Seattle by Mosquito Fleet steamer. The red feed store at its head, the last surviving original building, now houses a gift shop and cafe.
