Guide
Approach and anchoring
Lie off the town with the City Pier as a landmark, 0.2 miles to the north-east. Holding in the mud has a poor reputation and strong southerly winds set straight into the anchorage, so dig the anchor in well and keep an anchor watch in a blow.
Practical
Fresh water is available ashore. The City Pier is 0.2 miles to the north-east and Port Townsend Boat Haven, with a fuel berth, laundry, showers and travel lifts, 0.8 miles to the west.
Ashore
The downtown historic district stands a few minutes from the City Pier, one of only three Victorian seaports on the National Register of Historic Places. The Wooden Boat Festival each September draws over 200 vessels.
History
Port Townsend was founded on 24 April 1851 and grew as a port of entry guarding the gate of Puget Sound. When the economy declined in the 1890s, almost no Victorian buildings were replaced, leaving the 19th-century waterfront intact.
