Marina on Port Jefferson Harbour, a deep-water harbour on the North Shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach the harbour from the red and white Morse A buoy PJ on Long Island Sound, then steer southeast to flashing green buoy 1 and flashing red bell buoy 2. A federal channel 26 feet deep runs from the Sound to the south end of the harbour. Shoals lie on both sides of the channel near the entrance, so stay between the marks.
Practical
Transient and seasonal berths, with petrol and diesel, pump-out, toilets, showers and laundry. Port Jefferson village shops and restaurants are within walking distance. The Bridgeport and Port Jefferson ferry crosses the Sound from the harbour, so expect ferry traffic in the approach.
History
Port Jefferson was settled in the 1600s and became a leading shipbuilding centre in the 1800s. Bayles Shipyard, established in 1835, built more than 150 vessels before the industry closed in the 1920s.
