Approach and anchoring

Approach through the Étang de Berre, reached from the Mediterranean via the Caronte channel at Martigues. Sheltered inland lagoon with short fetch. Max draught 1.6 m. Watch for mistral setting up a steep chop across the lagoon.

108 berths. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Shops in the village of Saint-Chamas 2 km to the north-west. Fuel available at Port du Sagnas 1.8 nm south-east.

Ashore

Town of Saint-Chamas with the Pont Flavien, a Roman bridge from the 1st century BC on the via Aurelia, 2.5 km north-west. Poudrerie royale de Saint-Chamas heritage site on the former royal gunpowder works, now a park. Étang de Berre cycle route along the western shore.

History

The Étang de Berre was used for seaplane testing and aviation industry from 1917, with the Latécoère factory at Marignane on the east shore.
