Approach and anchoring
Enter the Étang de Berre through the Caronte canal at Martigues. Count about 8 nm from the canal to Istres on a northerly heading. Shallow margins along the west shore, keep more than 3 m under the keel outside the 200 m band. No tide, but strong mistral sets up short steep chop from the NW.
Practical
Open roadstead anchoring on mud, good holding. No services on the mooring itself. Port des Heures Claires lies 0.1 nm south with water, fuel and a capitainerie. Saint-Chamas harbour is 3 nm to the NE for a sheltered alternative.
Ashore
Town centre of Istres at about 600 m with shops, bakeries and a supermarket. Musée Archéologique d'Istres on rue du Puits Neuf covers local finds from the Étang. Walking path around the étang shoreline links to the Heures Claires marina.
