Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access from the Mediterranean via the Canal de Caronte at Martigues, then across the lagoon. No tide inside the lagoon. Protection from westerly winds; mistral funnels down the Rhône valley and builds a steep short chop across the étang.
Practical
Anchor on sand between patches of algae for better holding. Saint-Chamas harbour lies 1.4 NM to the NE; Istres Les Heures Claires 1.8 NM to the SW, both with provisions and water ashore.
History
The Étang de Berre is a 155 km² brackish lagoon linked to the sea by the Caronte channel. Salinity and ecology shifted sharply after the 1966 commissioning of the Saint-Chamas hydroelectric plant, which diverted fresh water from the Durance into the lagoon.
