Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the estuary mouth by the balisage of the Passe Sud or the Grande Passe de l'Ouest, then round the Pointe de Suzac to reach the cove. Strong tidal streams run off Royan, up to 3 knots at springs on the ebb. Holding on fine sand is good. Protection from N, NE, E and SE; fully open to SW and W where the Atlantic swell enters directly. Keep well outside the buoyed bathing area in season.
Practical
Day anchorage only, no services on the beach. Royan marina is 1.1 NM E with 1,000 berths, fuel, water and full services. Port Bloc is 3.5 NM S on the south bank, mainly used as the Le Verdon ferry terminal.
Ashore
Belle Époque villas of the Parc de Pontaillac line the cove, a rare surviving cluster of the resort architecture destroyed in the 1945 bombing of Royan. Royan town centre reachable on foot along the Grande Conche promenade in 2 km.
