Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the estuary of the Gironde. Shelter from N, NE, E and SE, fully open to the W and SW swells running up the estuary. Sand and mud bottom. Watch the tidal streams at the entrance of the estuary, which can exceed 3 knots on springs.
Practical
No facilities at the anchorage. The marina of Royan lies 0.5 NM to the NW for berths, fuel, water and all shops. Port Bloc, on the south bank, is 3.4 NM to the SW.
Ashore
The Grande Conche is a sandy beach of about 2 km backed by limestone cliffs, extending east of the city centre. The sentier des Douaniers follows the cliff top from Royan to Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Royan town centre, rebuilt after 1945 and listed as patrimoine du XXe siècle, is a 15-minute walk from the beach.
