Approach and anchoring

Approached from the Choptank River, about 11 miles up from the river mouth. The Town Creek channel runs close to town with limited swinging room, so most boats anchor in the wider river off Oxford. Mud bottom gives good holding. Shelter is from the SW through SE, with the anchorage open to the north.

Practical

Fresh water is available ashore. Safe Harbor Oxford lies 0.2 nm to the east and Tred Avon Yacht Club 0.2 nm to the west, both with transient berths and facilities. Shops, the Robert Morris Inn and the Oxford-Bellevue ferry landing are within walking distance of the town waterfront.

Ashore

The Oxford-Bellevue ferry crosses the river from the town landing. The Oxford Museum on Morris Street covers the town's maritime past. The waterfront promenade known as the Strand runs along the riverbank a short walk from the anchorage.

History

Oxford was established in 1683 and was one of colonial Maryland's two official ports of entry. The Oxford-Bellevue ferry has run across the Tred Avon since 1683, one of the oldest privately operated ferries in the United States.
