Approach and anchoring
Enclosed brackish lagoon entered from the Mediterranean via the Caronte canal at Martigues. No tide to speak of inside the étang. Shallow approach, keep clear of the aquaculture buoys along the western shore. Watch for mistral gusts funnelling from the NW across open water.
Practical
Mud bottom, good holding once the anchor sets. Shelter from SE, S and SW winds. No services on site. Nearest refuge is Istres-Les Heures Claires 1.9 NM NW, Port de Ferrières 4 NM S at Martigues.
Ashore
Medieval hilltop village of Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts at about 2 km, with 14th century ramparts and the Saint Blaise archaeological site 3 km west, a Greek and Roman oppidum open to visitors.
