Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from Merchant Row, the band of islands between Stonington and Isle au Haut in Penobscot Bay. The bottom is mud over rock with good holding, and there are two berths to choose from depending on wind. The cove is open to the south-east, so watch the rocks off the McGlathery shore at low water and allow room to swing.
Ashore
A sandy pocket beach in the south-eastern crook of the main cove gives an easy landing by tender. Largely unmarked footpaths cross the wooded 140-acre island. There are no facilities and no fresh water.
History
From 1954 the island was owned by the Canadian group Friends of Nature; ownership passed to Maine Coast Heritage Trust in 2021, which keeps it open to the public for low-impact day use and camping.
