Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach Southwest Harbor from the south, leaving Great Cranberry Island to the east and Bass Harbor Head Light to the west. The yard sits on the Manset shore on the east side of the harbour. Holding ground in the outer harbour is mud, good. Visiting yachts usually take a mooring buoy before contacting the yard on VHF 9.
Practical
Over 100 berths plus mooring buoys for yachts up to 21 metres. Diesel and petrol at the fuel berth, open seven days in season. Showers, heads, laundry, chandlery on site. 16 acres of yard with travel-lift, indoor heated storage and full refit services. Provisions and restaurants in Southwest Harbor village, 1 km on foot.
Ashore
Acadia National Park trails start a short walk from the harbour. The Ship Harbor Nature Trail and the Wonderland loop are at 5 km west by road. Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse at 7 km. Northeast Harbor and the Asticou Azalea Garden at 1.8 NM by water or 13 km by road. Carriage roads of Acadia accessible from the centre of the island.
History
The yard was founded as the Manset Boatyard in 1928 by Henry R. Hinckley, servicing local lobster boats and the yachts of Mount Desert Island summer residents. The company built the first production Bermuda 40 here in 1959 and the first jet-drive Picnic Boat in 1994, both designs that defined American yacht building.
