Guide
Approach and anchoring
Somes Sound runs five miles inland from the Atlantic, with deep water for most of its length. Make for the head of the sound past the narrows. The mud bottom gives good holding, and the surrounding hills shelter the anchorage from N through E winds. Fresh water is available ashore.
Practical
Henry R. Abel & Co. has run a full-service yard here since 1975, with moorings, transient dockage and haul-out. Northeast Harbor lies 3.8 miles south for fuel and provisions.
Ashore
Abel's Lobster sits alongside the yard and has served on Somes Sound for more than 80 years. Acadia National Park trails cover the hills on both shores, with carriage roads reachable from the western side of the sound.
