Approach and anchoring

Make for the head of Somes Sound, a deep glacial inlet running into Mount Desert Island. Good anchoring lies west of the private mooring field, with a well-regarded spot between Sheep Island and the mainland in about 15 feet at low water. Holding is over mud, sand and rock. The harbour is sheltered from every quarter.

Practical

No fuel or marina at the anchorage. Visiting boats may land dinghies in the designated area at the south-west corner of the Somesville town landing float. For fuel and full services, Northeast Harbor lies 4.4 nm to the south-east.

Ashore

Somesville is the oldest settlement on Mount Desert Island, founded in 1761. A short walk leads to its white clapboard houses and the arched footbridge over the mill pond. Trails of Acadia National Park run nearby.
