Approach and anchoring

Approach with care on a rising tide. The bay of Saint-Malo has a tidal range over 12 m on spring tides, one of the largest in Europe, and strong currents run across the approaches. Drying rocks and isolated dangers are scattered east of the Rance estuary, stay on charted lines between cardinal marks. Use VHF 12 for Saint-Malo harbour control.

Practical

No services at the mooring. Saint-Malo Port Vauban lies 3.6 nm to the SW with a locked basin, fuel berth and full marina services. Port Picain sits 4 nm to the E as a drying harbour with limited facilities.

Ashore

The walled city of Saint-Malo, rebuilt after 1944 on its medieval plan, is reached from Port Vauban. Ramparts walk around the old town, about 1.8 km. Fort National on its tidal islet is accessible at low water from Plage de l'Éventail.

History

Saint-Malo was home port of the corsairs Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin in the 17th and 18th centuries. Jacques Cartier sailed from here in 1534 on the voyage that charted the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The walled town was largely destroyed in August 1944 and rebuilt stone by stone in the 1950s.
