Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east on a rising tide to avoid the vast drying banks of the bay. Sand bottom. The roadstead is protected from NW through N to E and exposed to SE winds and to swell from the bay. Tidal range reaches over 12 m on springs, one of the largest in Europe, plan ground tackle and scope accordingly.

Practical

Water available ashore at the Port de la Houle. No fuel or chandlery on site. Port de Cancale 0.6 NM NE offers drying berths, Port Picain 1.5 NM N is the alternative. Landing by tender at the slipway of La Houle at high water.

Ashore

Oyster beds of Cancale stretch along the foreshore, with tasting stalls on the Marché aux Huîtres below the lighthouse. GR 34 climbs to the Pointe du Grouin, 4 km N, a SPN seabird site overlooking the Îles des Landes reserve. Saint-Méen church and the old fishermen's quarter sit on the hill above La Houle.

History

Cancale supplied oysters to the court of Versailles under Louis XIV. The bisquines, two-masted sailing trawlers, worked the bay from the 19th century, two replicas, La Cancalaise and La Granvillaise, still sail from the port.
