History
The Bassin Vauban was dug in 1839 as the first wet dock of Saint-Malo, serving the Terre-Neuvas cod-fishing schooners sailing to Newfoundland. The Naye lock was modernised in the 1990s. Saint-Malo itself was a chartered corsair city under Louis XIV, home port of Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin.
Story
Jacques Cartier sailed from Saint-Malo in April 1534 and reached the St Lawrence River, claiming Canada for France. A statue of him stands on the ramparts above Port Vauban.
