Guide

Approach and anchoring

The anchorage lies in the Cumberland River channel west of the island, reached from the Intracoastal Waterway or up from the St Marys entrance. The marsh banks shelter from north through south-east, leaving a south-westerly fetch open. Tidal range runs around two metres, so allow for current when setting the anchor.

Practical

Sand and mud give fair holding. The island is part of Cumberland Island National Seashore and overnight visiting boats must anchor off, as the Park Service docks at Sea Camp and Dungeness are for day landing only. Saint Marys Boat Service is 2.7 nautical miles to the west, Tiger Point Marina 4.1 nautical miles to the south.

Ashore

Land the tender at the Sea Camp or Dungeness dock to reach the National Seashore. Trails lead to the Dungeness ruins, the burned shell of the Carnegie mansion, and to wide Atlantic beaches where feral horses graze. A ranger station and self-guided walks start near the Sea Camp landing.

History

Cumberland Island National Seashore was established in 1972 to protect most of the island. The Dungeness estate was built by the Carnegie family in the 1880s and destroyed by fire in 1959; its ruins still stand near the south end.
