Approach and anchoring
Approach at half tide and above. The harbour dries at low water on a mud and sand bottom. Channel marked by port and starboard perches leading to the entrance. Large tidal range of the Pertuis d'Antioche, up to 6 m at springs. No VHF watch outside office hours.
Practical
180 berths, most of which dry at low water. Water and electricity at the pontoons. Sanitary block with showers. Bakery and small supermarket in the town centre at 500 m. Railway station on the La Rochelle to Bordeaux line at 1 km.
Ashore
Plage de Châtelaillon, a sandy beach of 3 km, runs along the seafront starting immediately north of the harbour. Oyster-farming parks of the Baie d'Yves visible at low water 2 km south. La Rochelle old harbour is 12 km north by road or by sea.
History
The modern harbour was completed in the 1980s to support local oyster farming and pleasure boating. Châtelaillon itself was an important medieval stronghold before its castle was razed in 1130 by Guillaume X d'Aquitaine.
