Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach through the Pertuis d'Antioche between Île d'Aix and the mainland. Strong tidal streams in the pertuis, up to 3 knots on springs. Fort Enet and Fort Boyard stand to the west on the approach from the open sea. Rade de l'Île d'Aix lies 0.9 nm SW, Fouras Port Sud 3.3 nm SE.
Practical
Anchor on mud, good holding. No services on site. Fouras Port Sud dries at low water, check tide before entry. Rade de l'Île d'Aix offers alternative anchorage in settled weather.
History
The Pertuis d'Antioche was fortified in the seventeenth century under Vauban to protect the Rochefort arsenal, with Fort Enet built on the Fouras shore and Fort Boyard started in 1804 and completed in 1866 in the middle of the pertuis.
