Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Rade d'Aix keeping east of the Fort de la Rade shoal. Strong tidal streams run across the pertuis, up to 3 knots at springs, plan arrival near slack water. Mud holding in 3 to 6 m. Sheltered from SW, W and NW, exposed to NE winds blowing down from the Charente.
Practical
Three recorded berths on forain anchorage, no buoys. Rade de l'île d'Aix 1.2 nm SW for better shelter, Fouras Port Sud 3.3 nm SE.
Ashore
Île d'Aix, car-free village of about 200 residents, 15 minutes on foot from the north shore. Fort Liédot, built under Napoleon, open to visitors. Musée Napoléonien in the house where the emperor spent his last three days on French soil in July 1815 before surrendering to HMS Bellerophon.
History
The Rade d'Aix was the scene of the 1809 Battle of the Basque Roads, where Admiral Cochrane's fireships attacked a French fleet at anchor.
