Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open roadstead off the river mouth, approached from the bay. Mud bottom. Sheltered from south-west through south-east winds only, fully exposed to the north and west across the bay.
Ashore
Betterton Beach is a 5.2 acre town park with 300 feet of sandy swimming frontage, a bathhouse, a picnic pavilion and a stone fishing jetty. A transient launching ramp is on site. Skipjack Cove and Duffy Creek marinas lie about 7.2 nm up the Sassafras to the east.
History
Betterton was a Chesapeake steamboat resort: before 1900 some eleven steamboat landings a day called at its piers. Its boom ran from 1918 to 1930 before the resort declined after the Bay Bridge opened.
