Guide

Approach and anchoring

Howell Point marks the northern side of the Sassafras River entrance, opposite Grove Point. The anchorage is open and gives shelter only from the south-west to south-east, on a mud bottom. The Bay shipping channel passes within a quarter of a mile, so keep a watch ahead and astern.

Practical

Anchoring only, with no facilities. The nearest marinas are well inside Worton Creek, Green Point Landing and Worton Creek Marina, both about 6.5 miles to the south-west.

Ashore

Betterton Beach lies about 2 miles east, a free Kent County public beach on the Sassafras with a bathhouse, snack bar and picnic tables. Betterton was a Victorian summer resort from the late 1800s into the 1940s.
