Marina of 1015 berths at the head of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, on the western side of Cap Corse in Haute-Corse.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north across the gulf, clear of hazards once past Punta Vecchiaia. Entrance marked by red and green jetty lights. Shelter is good from all quadrants except strong Libeccio from the west, which sends swell into the bay. Maximum draught 4 m. Call the capitainerie on VHF 9. Berthing help is provided but the seasonal crews are variable, so be ready to handle lines from on board.
Practical
1015 berths with water and electricity, fuel berth for diesel and petrol. Booking through resaportcorse is erratic, taken only 48 hours ahead or on the day and often unanswered, so many crews call VHF 9 at the entrance and take their chance on a berth. Expect around 80 euros for a 12 m boat in season. Showers are paid and the sanitary block has been closed for rebuilding. All shops, banks and a supermarket within 300 m in the old town, market on the square Wednesday and Saturday mornings. A quayside nightclub runs loud until about 2 a.m.
Ashore
Citadel of Saint-Florent above the port, built by the Genoese from 1440. Plage de la Roya, a 1.6 km sand beach, starts 600 m south of the marina. The Agriates desert coast and the Plage du Loto are reached by shuttle boat from the quay, crossing in about 20 minutes. Crews waiting for a berth anchor off and land by dinghy, with jetties at one end of the harbour and by the iron bridge at the other. The restaurant l'Olivier et le Caporal delivers to boats on the Quai d'Honneur.
History
Saint-Florent was a Genoese stronghold and briefly capital of the short-lived Anglo-Corsican Kingdom from 1794 to 1796 under Viceroy Sir Gilbert Elliot. The circular citadel on the point dates from the mid-15th century.
Story
The gulf is the southern edge of the Patrimonio AOC, one of the oldest wine appellations in Corsica, recognised in 1968.
