Approach and anchoring
Approach from the open sea to the south of the island. Sand bottom reported across the anchoring area but extensive Zostera noltii seagrass meadows are protected, so dropping the hook is prohibited on the posted zones. Marked submarine cables cross part of the bay, so anchor towards the end of the beach clear of them. Keep clear of swimmers close to the beach. Exposed to wind and swell from E to SE.
Practical
No services on site. The bay offers shelter from W and SW winds only and works as an alternative to nearby Plage des Vieilles when swell wraps round the headland into that bay. Nearest refuges are Port Joinville at 3 NM NW and Fromentine at 13.2 NM NE.
Ashore
The GR 80 coast path runs along the cliff above the beach and links to Port de la Meule in 4 km and to the Vieux-Château in 5 km. Village of Saint-Sauveur with bakery and grocery is 2 km inland on foot.
History
The Île d'Yeu was a fortified outpost from the Middle Ages and held the exiled Marshal Pétain at the Fort de Pierre-Levée from 1945 to 1951.
