Oléron, Marennes and the Seudre: oyster channels and gated basins

14 places · Charente-Maritime

On its landward side, Oléron is oyster country, sailed from one tidal channel to the next. Le Douhet is entered at high water and never at night, since its entrance is unlit. Boyardville opens its basin 2 to 3 hours either side of high water depending on the coefficient, and boats wait off Les Saumonards, good holding in northwest to southwest winds. Le Château only takes visiting boats around high water. Up the Seudre, Marennes and La Tremblade are basins with automatic gates at the end of their channels, for drafts of 1.6 to 1.8 m. Around Fort Boyard, all boating is banned within 500 m.
