Tidal harbour of 200 berths on the eastern coast of Oleron island, facing the Brouage marshes in Charente-Maritime.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access around high water through a narrow marked channel across the mudflats. Keep the two lighthouses in line and follow the withies and poles on the north side to avoid grounding on the mud. VHF channel 9. Maximum draught 1.5 m and the harbour dries at low water of spring tides. The Avant-Port takes visitors from about 2.30 m of tidal height; the inner Pâté basin, behind a bridge, is for motorboats and carries around 2.5 m. Watch for the oyster parks along the channel. Saint-Trojan-les-Bains lies 2.4 NM south, Brouage 5 NM east.
Practical
Around 200 berths. Few visitor places, so call the harbour office ahead; visitors lie on the Avant-Port pontoon or on moorings. Note there is no water or electricity on the visitor pontoon. Fuel station on site. Public toilets at the citadel are open around the clock. Bakery, supermarket and cafes in the town, a few minutes' walk from the quay.
Ashore
Citadel of Le Chateau-d'Oleron built under Louis XIII and reinforced by Vauban, with ramparts open to walkers. Port des Salines, a reconstituted salt-marsh site with coloured fishermen's huts turned into craft workshops, 1 km south. Oyster tasting cabins along the quays.
History
The citadel was commissioned by Cardinal Richelieu in the 1630s to protect the Charente coast and the Brouage arsenal across the mudflats. It was later adapted by Vauban.
