Approach and anchoring

Reached from the Potomac through the Washington Channel, a no-wake stretch with a sand bottom. Anchoring in the channel is now prohibited following the waterfront redevelopment. Visitors take a mooring buoy or a berth instead. The channel is well sheltered, open mainly through the south.

Practical

Mooring buoys take vessels up to about 45 feet. Fresh water is available. The Wharf Marina and the Port of Washington Yacht Club both lie within 0.2 nautical miles and add fuel, showers, laundry and in-slip pumpout.

Ashore

The mooring sits just south of the National Mall. The monuments and Smithsonian museums are within a short walk along the waterfront, and the Maine Avenue Fish Market, in business on the channel since the early twentieth century, is at the north end of The Wharf.
