Stuart Island is a marine state park north-west of San Juan Island in Washington, with two well-sheltered harbours: Reid Harbor and Prevost Harbor.

Approach and anchoring

Reid Harbor cuts deep into the island from the south-east and holds 13 mooring buoys plus a dock; Prevost Harbor opens to the north-west with seven buoys and a dock. Together the harbours offer 20 buoys, 448 feet of dock and a pump-out. The mud bottom gives good holding for boats anchoring beyond the buoy field.

Practical

No fuel and no shore power. There is no road access to the island, which is reached only by boat. Both harbours stay calm in most conditions, making the park a common overnight stop in the northern San Juans.

Ashore

From the dock at Reid Harbor, a road climbs to the former Stuart Island schoolhouse, now a small museum, about 1.5 miles on. The Turn Point Light Station sits at the western tip of the island overlooking Boundary Pass, roughly a 5 to 6 mile round trip on foot from the harbour.
