Approach and anchoring

Approach up the Savannah River, 8.6 NM upstream of the Intracoastal Waterway crossing. Strong tidal current runs along the dock, up to 2 to 3 knots at springs, and ships transit the channel close by. IGY Trident Marina is 0.3 NM east on the same bank, Savannah Bend Marina 3.5 NM south-east on the Wilmington River.

Practical

Four berths on 300 feet of floating dock. Free use up to three hours; overnight stays are billed by the linear foot, paid to the city dockmaster on +1 912 651 3634. Shore power on the dock but no fresh water. First come, first served, no reservations.

Ashore

River Street and its row of restored cotton warehouses run the length of the dock. The Savannah Historic District, laid out around its eighteenth-century squares, begins one block south. The Belles Ferry to Hutchinson Island runs from a landing 100 m east of the dock, zero fare.

History

Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as the first city of the colony of Georgia. River Street was the cotton export waterfront of the antebellum South. The warehouses behind the dock were converted to restaurants and bars in the 1970s, and the floating public dock was added later to give recreational boaters short-term access to the downtown.
