Approach and anchoring

Access from the sea through the Arzal lock at the river mouth, then about 8 nautical miles upstream. Fresh water above the dam, no tide. River channel well marked. Port de La Roche Bernard lies 0.7 nautical miles south if the anchorage is taken.

Practical

Holding on rock and mud, cover from all quarters thanks to the wooded banks. Town quay, showers, water and fuel at the town marina 0.7 nautical miles south. Multi Nautique boatyard 2.8 nautical miles north.

Ashore

Old town perched on a granite bluff above the river, reached by a steep path from the pontoons in about 10 minutes. Rue du Ruicard and Place du Bouffay keep 16th and 17th century houses. Saturday morning market on Place du Four.

History

La Roche-Bernard was a shipbuilding town from the 17th century. The warship Couronne, built here in 1634, was the first large French ship of the line. The town is classed as a Petite Cite de Caractere of Brittany.
