Anchorage on the Vilaine upstream of the Arzal dam, mud bottom, well sheltered by surrounding wooded banks.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach the Vilaine through the Arzal-Camoël lock, the only access from the sea. The river above the dam is fresh water with no tide. Navigate the marked channel and keep to the centre of the river, depths drop quickly near the banks.
Practical
Mud bottom holds well. Sheltered from most directions except locally from the NW along the main axis of the river. Port d'Arzal-Camoël lies 1.2 nm SW with fuel, water and a boatyard. Anchoring is tolerated on the Vilaine outside the marked channel.
Ashore
Village of La Roche-Bernard is about 5 km upstream by river, with a medieval old town above the cliff and daily shops. Towpath along the Vilaine for walking and cycling on both banks.
