River anchorage on the Vilaine between the Arzal dam and La Roche-Bernard, rock bottom, protected from W to SE winds.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Vilaine is entered from the sea through the Arzal lock, built in 1970 to dam the estuary. Lock operates by day with set cycles. Above the lock the river carries fresh water with negligible tide. Channel buoyed to La Roche-Bernard, the rock bottom makes anchor holding uneven.
Practical
Port d'Arzal-Camoël sits just above the dam with around 1000 berths, fuel, water, electricity and a boatyard. Port de la Roche-Bernard lies 1 NM upstream with visitor pontoons and all village shops within 200 m of the quay.
Ashore
La Roche-Bernard is a Petite Cité de Caractère with 16th and 17th century houses above the river. The old shipbuilding port on the Rouzic stream recalls the launch of the 58-gun ship La Couronne in 1634. Nature trail along the Vilaine gorges from the village.
History
The Vilaine was closed to tidal flow by the Arzal barrage commissioned in 1970 to supply drinking water to the Morbihan and control flooding. La Roche-Bernard was a Protestant stronghold and royal shipyard in the 17th century.
